Within your first three months, you'll:
- Improve application infrastructure for 10x application usage and user growth; improve monitoring dashboards to track availability and performance
- Audit existing infrastructure for cost-saving opportunities
- Improve team standards and processes around infrastructure security, monitoring, alerting, and deployment
- Improve alerting and team processes around server issues and downtime
- Set up a reliable AWS infrastructure for internal analytics, including CD/CI pipeline, zero-downtime deployment, and AWS configurations
- Set up a repeatable process and infrastructure for load testing
- Earn trust from the team by being a go-to person for questions and advice on infrastructure and architecture decisions
- Become a BioRender champion. You'll understand who our users are, what their needs are, our business objectives, and how all the different company functions contribute to the company’s mission. You'll be able to clearly communicate how your role contributes to the company’s mission and how every project and initiative benefits users
What you bring to the table
- You are proficient in AWS (EC2, ALB, S3, Lambda, API Gateway, Redis, SQS)
- You have scaled large infrastructure systems that: Had demanding security requirements, made extensive use of several AWS services, demanded fast scaling for exponential growth, handled downtime, monitoring, alerting, and testing
- You have a demonstrated ability to creatively solve complex architectural problems, and think about tradeoffs in systems design, performance, and cost
- You have excellent technical communication skills (code documentation, architectural documents, and presentation)
- You have strong experience (5+ years full time, with at least 1 year as a Senior) in software development

Responsibilities
- Lead and expand an organization of development managers, engineers and software development engineers in test.
- Responsible for a global growing and retaining a team of highly-talented engineers involved in the product delivery life cycle.
- Responsible for collaborating with the Engineering VP on opex and capex budget management
- Collaborate with internal Engineering leadership from Cloud, Full Stack, Integrations, UX, PMO and Tier-3 on release delivery and commitments
- Work side by side with Product Management on strategic road map items, as well as Customer Success to create an reliable, consistent, high-quality product experience
- Able to fit in well within an informal startup environment and to provide hands-on management.
- Ensure the timely completion of multiple complex, independent projects and provide technical direction in matrix environment.
- Coordinate the testing and integration activities working with core engineering teams.
- Experience on estimating project effort and scope for services.
- Evaluate and recommend technology solutions to meet scalability and growth targets, create prototypes, create and carry out phased development and deployment plans.
About You
- 10+ years of relevant experience managing startup, fast-paced and dynamic engineering teams
- Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics and/or an Engineering DisciplineExperience working with a US-based product and engineering organization
- Knowledge of Enterprise software implementation/deployment processes, security topics, performance and scalability
- Strong customer communication and leadership skillsProficient in at least one major object-oriented and modern web application scripting language
- Knowledge of Cloud / SaaS based infrastructure, using Amazon AWS, EC2, RDS, S3, etc.
- Experience with data science and analytics, such as data mining, machine learning algorithms, anomaly detection, etc., is a plus.
- Experience on estimating project effort and scope for services.
- Understands and executes many of the prominent exercises around agile planning, development and process
- Self starter, proactive and must be able to be multitasking.
- Excellent communication skills and experience to work with oversea headquarter engineering teams.
- Proven experience managing and hiring a growing team.
- Must be willing to travel to engineering headquarters and customers in the U.S. and abroad (not immediately)

Here's what we're looking for
- Strong writing skills; ability to craft clear and concise documentation
- Strong background in Linux/Unix Administration
- Strong experience with deployment orchestration using Nomad, Consul, and Docker, and Kubernetes

The Role
You will own the full cycle of technical solutions across all Tempo products to build a robust unified technical vision and toolset. You will work with 40+ engineers in multiple teams to find and analyze present and anticipated future technical challenges with their projects or products. You will work in an entirely distributed company and help define an entirely new space while learning about how an organization scales on a hyper-growth trajectory!- Discuss, formulate, and document a vision for Frontend architecture and approaches in all Tempo software products
- Detail out and refine higher-level architecture decisions into a lower-level design
- Lead implementation of technical and infrastructure initiatives to support architecture decisions
- Communicate the vision to the engineering team
- Overlook and review the work of the team to ensure that the architecture decisions are being executed and the team is following coding standards and architecture guidelines
- Consult the engineering team with ongoing projects
- Help the engineering team align solutions with the Tempo architecture vision and industry best practices
- Make software design (application-level) decisions with the team, take software architecture topics for further consideration and unification
- Ensure technical knowledge sharing between development teams on related or similar projects
- Lead the research on specific topics, experiment with various technologies, and provide recommendations based on your findings
- Proactively identify technical debt and product areas that require attention or improvement at the architecture level
- Constantly develop yourself and the team in technology advancements, research new approaches, tools and best practices in the software architecture and design space

The Ideal Candidate
- 8+ years of front-end web development experience — preference is given to candidates who have maintained or architected large scale applications
- Experience in facilitating even the most heated discussions, ability to resolve them and take responsibility for the decisions
- Track record of delivering successful solutions as a leader

- Proficiency in JavaScript and React
- Experience working with or building unified UI libraries
