About Us

Proton.ai is revolutionizing wholesale distribution. Distributors sell nearly every physical good you come across. Key to the economy, they make up over 28% of GDP. But there’s a problem. Selling as a distributor is complicated. Distributors carry hundreds of thousands of complicated SKUs, making it impossible for distributors to know what their customers need. Proton cuts through this complexity with AI. We provide a cutting edge solution that modernizes distributors' sales efforts. In doing so, we fulfill our mission of helping distributors better serve their customers while guaranteeing that hardworking people can use technology, rather than being squeezed out by it.

Delivering a great product with proven value that’s loved by our customers requires a tremendous team effort. At Proton, critical to our mission of sustainable growth is an intensely focused endeavour to build happy, fulfilled teams who take pride in the long term impact of their work. If you want to join a team that is invested in creating technology that improves the working lives of its customers, we’d love to hear from you.

Our company is in hyper growth mode. We’ve grown >6X YoY. Needless to say, it’s an exciting time to join the Proton.ai team

The Role

At Proton, we're bringing cutting-edge machine learning to B2B distribution. By predicting what customers will buy, we're improving sales and efficiency, and driving growth. Of course, we have to do this in a smart, scalable way, and take steps not to overload the user with data. Our goal is to make things easier for our users to be effective with minimal effort on their part, not to create a new Excel.

As a Backend Engineer, you'll work within our Python/Go webapp to improve the workflows of distribution sales reps. You'll have access to our growing backend group across the company working across our different products. You'll also have access to actual users to workshop your features.

What you'll do:

  • Work with UX designers, product managers, and frontend engineers to help devise, design, build, and revise new features.

  • You'll achieve this through collaborating with your team to deliver a seamless, performant experience across the web and mobile device

  • Collaborate with data scientists to deliver thoughtful features powered by cutting-edge machine learning models.

Experience that may be helpful:

  • You will need some familiarity with big data and deploying scalable and tested code, but specific knowledge of Python or Go is not required.

  • (Our backend code is written mostly in Python with some Go deployed using a microservice architecture. Frontend components are written primarily in Vue.js)

Benefits

This is a full-time, fully remote position. US Salary $90-93k, plus equity, health benefits (we pay 99%), 401k and a generous vacation policy.

We're a remote-first company and open to candidates anywhere in the world. While we try to accommodate employee's schedules, our business largely operates on East Coast hours.

As you may have noticed, our hiring process is a little different. At Proton.ai, we assess candidates using an unbiased and thoughtful process. We ask questions directly related to the work you will be doing. Resumes are optional. They are not the focus of our selection process.

As our Frontend Integration Engineer, you'll be responsible for the technical integration of Proton's offering in our client's eCommerce sites. You'll learn about our clients needs, in order to scope the project and set Proton up for a successful implementation. You'll then work with the client, code, deploy and test the solution while being our client-facing ambassador for good UX practices and design. Selling as a distributor is complicated. Distributors carry hundreds of thousands of complicated products, making it impossible for distributors to know what their customers need. Proton cuts through this complexity with AI. We provide a solution that modernizes distributors' sales efforts. And in doing so, we help distributors better serve their customers and grow.

Our company is in hypergrowth mode. We’ve grown by more than six fold year over year. Needless to say, it’s an exciting time to join the Proton.ai team.

The Role

As the first engineering manager for a data platform team, you'll build features that enable outside organizations to use our powerful set of APIs and interface with our product. You’ll serve as the engineering leader for a team, helping your fellow team members deepen their expertise, effectively collaborate, and develop a technology vision. Together with the product team, you'll work to build scalable solutions to big problems. This position reports to our chief technology officer.

Your Impact

On a typical day you might:

  • Collaborate with your product manager to prioritize new features and propose features for our roadmap

  • Meet with other engineering leaders to discuss lessons learned and how to scale them to the rest of the engineering team

  • Meet with engineers you manage to solve problems and help them grow and progress in their careers

  • Build core pieces of data technology used by other development teams to power their software and systems with our powerful data collation and machine learning APIs

Who We're Looking For

Our team codes in Go, JavaScript (using the Vue framework), and Python, with modern scalable document- and key-based data stores behind them. We prefer excellence to expediency. Backed by our microservice architecture, we want the best tool not the most convenient. If there’s a compelling case to write something in Clojure, we can and will do it. With strong foundations, specific knowledge of these tools is not required. As the driver of engineering on this team, you'll have a chance to define the technology vision for our order entry systems.

As an early member of the company, you’ll have a chance to shape how we grow, making key decisions around technical choices, and defining our culture. We're working to build a sustainable environment where excellence sits alongside a recognition we operate in a system and a need to nurture learning at all levels. Our growing corps of engineering leadership, including this role, should bring more expertise into that equation.

Benefits

This is a full-time remote position within North America (or willing to work USA hours). Salary is $135k. We cover 99% of your health insurance cost, offer an unconditional 401(k) contribution, and have a vacation policy that actually wants you to take time off.

  • Experience using and managing infrastructure on a major cloud platform (GCP, AWS, etc.) - we run on Google Cloud.

  • Knowledge of linux environments and relevant languages (i.e. Bash) in order to manage, setup, and automate aspects of our services.

  • The ability to contribute to or troubleshoot our codebase and backend, a majority of which is written in Python.

  • An understanding of CI/CD and git workflows, along with other development best practices you will help create and enforce.

  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code, automation, or Kubernetes management tools (i.e. Ansible, Terraform, Helm, or similar) to create the systems that ensure visibility and reliability of our infrastructure.

At Proton, we're bringing cutting-edge machine learning to business-to-business distribution. By predicting what customers will buy, we're improving sales and efficiency, and driving growth. We're looking for a data scientist to help us make that vision a reality by developing and refining cutting-edge machine learning models and data processing systems.

Our outside sales product helps outside sales users — salespeople who visit the customers they sell to — do their jobs more effectively. You'll help build predictive models and use data to give them insights into their customers and across their sales portfolios. Our outside sales product, for example, uses machine learning for free-text product search using custom language models.

We are not looking to build a series of basic linear regressions with SciKit learn. Our data science group works with cutting-edge neural network architectures and other high-power machine learning techniques to solve deep problems with elegant solutions for our users. We believe deep solutions to big problems help solve the real problems our users face in their work.

This position reports to the lead engineer on the outside sales team. The data science group also regularly meets across teams (including our CTO). We have a journal club that meets regularly to discuss interesting ideas, we push to explore cutting-edge research, and we encourage collaboration across teams. You'll also have a chance to regularly speak with users to gain domain knowledge and tailor your ideas.

Our machine learning work mostly happens in Python using TensorFlow and Keras. Our infrastructure team works with the data science group on tooling for model training, testing, and deployment. We have a microservice architecture that makes working with data easy and secure. Familiarity with some programming and machine learning techniques is essential, but familiarity with these specific toolsets is not.

At Proton we're bringing cutting-edge technology to the world of business-to-business distribution. It's a large market that accounts for trillions of dollars of revenue a year and offers an enormous opportunity for growth. It's a huge chance to have an impact by shaking up an industry that's still waking up to the promise of technology. We have a chance to really transform the way a huge number of people work for the better, and bridge the gap between amazing software tools and human expertise.

To achieve those ends, we have organized the company into several teams, or "pods", tasked with providing value to different users, and we're looking for backend engineers to join two of them. One team is committed towards improving the effectiveness of Customer/Inside Sales Representatives, salespeople who are used to reaching out to prospective or renewing buyers over a phone line and trying to provide a valuable pitch to their customer. The other is dedicated to providing value for Outside Sales Reps, who typically find themselves on the road reaching out to prospects in person. As a member of either pod, you'll build backend systems in innovative and scalable ways with the end-user in mind, ultimately it's your choice which pod you'd like to join.

Our team codes in Python, JavaScript (using the Vue framework), and Go, with modern scalable document- and key-based data stores behind them. We prefer excellence to expediency. Backed by our microservice architecture, we want the best tool not the most convenient. If there’s a compelling case to write something in Clojure, we can and will do it. With strong foundations, specific knowledge of these tools is not required. As an early member of our growing engineering team, you'll have the opportunity to weigh in on design and architectural solutions that shape the company's future.

On the hiring process, you may have noticed that we haven't asked you for a resume yet. This is intentional, a longer explanation of why our process is so unorthodox and a primer of what to expect can be found in this blog post, but to summarize: we want to hire the brightest, not necessarily the most credentialed or best put on paper.

If you really know what you're doing, whether you're self taught or have spent your entire life until now in academia, we'd love to have you aboard the team.

At Proton we're bringing cutting-edge technology to the world of business-to-business distribution. It's a large market that offers an enormous opportunity for growth. The industry we serve accounts for trillions of dollars of revenue a year. It's a huge chance to have an impact by shaking up an industry that's still waking up to the promise of technology. We have a chance to really transform the way a huge number of people work for the better, and bridge the gap between amazing software tools and human expertise.

By becoming the source of truth for our customers' data, we're helping them make better decisions and be more effective. We’re looking for a lead engineer for our data platform team to help make that vision a reality.

As a member of the data platform team, you'll build backend systems that unify, clean, and transform our customers' data. In addition, you’ll serve as the engineering leader for the team, helping your fellow team members deepen their expertise, effectively collaborate, and develop a technology vision. Together with the product team, you'll work to build scalable solutions to big problems. This position reports to our chief technology officer.

At Proton, we hire a little differently. Read about that and more on our engineering blog.

By searching for truth in our customers' data we're helping them make better decisions and be more effective. We are looking for a SecOps engineer to help make that vision a reality.

Our backend is largely written with Python, so some experience with that or another dynamic programming language are essential, as is comfort with and interest in cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure, and containerized architectures. Good time management, communication and organizational skills are a plus.

As a SecOps engineer you will be a part of our foundations team, working to build out new internal features and improve our current systems, such as permissions management and a development environment. You'll help with CI/CD projects, and will implement and maintain security best practices. You will also problem solve creatively to design and manage the security strategy across Google Cloud infrastructure and user facing applications, ensuring that any potential security issues are quashed before they begin.
