The Education Infrastructure team supports the development and operations of the Summit Learning Platform, currently serving hundreds of schools across 39 states and the District of Columbia. By building shared tools, infrastructure, and APIs, we ensure that the platform is reliable, performant, and secure. In this role, you will partner closely with members of the product engineering team and the core infrastructure team to cultivate shared best practices that allow the entire team to rapidly improve our product.

- Analyze and improve reliability, performance, and security of CZI Education’s products and build shared components that benefit multiple teams and products at once
- Build, and maintain core infrastructure services in AWS and Heroku, in the process managing infrastructure as code using Terraform
- Contribute to redesigns of our infrastructure and platform to enable future product development
- Improve developer infrastructure including including CI pipelines, continuous deployment processes, monitoring and observability tools, and development environments
- Improve developer experience through tooling and platform innovation
- Identify and automate critical workflows improving team efficiency and software quality
- Build off of and contribute back to the open-source ecosystem
You have

The Infrastructure organization works on building shared tools and platforms to be used across all of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. A person in this role will build these technology solutions and help to cultivate a culture of shared best practices and knowledge around machine learning and data science focused engineering.

- Design and build Machine Learning tools, libraries, and platform solutions for use across 5+ engineering teams in their Data Science and Machine Learning efforts
- Work with project teams across CZI in building complete lifecycle machine learning and AI based projects to automate predictive models and deploy active machine learning based services for production user facing applications
- Act as both a peer and mentor to project teams to help with the full machine learning lifecycle from concept to production
- Drive design and implementation of underlying components that are critical to successfully delivering production scale solutions, including scalable logging and data storage implementations
- Participate in architecting and building our own team’s Operational Analytics platform, which underpins our team’s efforts in providing an efficient and scalable set of core and data infrastructure platform components for the organization

CZI fosters collaboration between scientists and engineers, develops tools and technologies, and builds support for basic scientific research.
The Shasta team goal is routine, accurate and cost-effective de novo genome sequencing of any individual or organism, for use in both research and clinical settings. In partnership with the University of California Santa Cruz Genomics Institute, the CZI team is building a de novo genome assembler for nanopore DNA sequencing. Shasta can assemble genomes in a fraction of the time and cost of traditional methods, and is used by scientists to explore the genomic diversity of all species.
As a Software Engineer in the Shasta team, you will work with scientists and engineers to advance the state of genome sequencing.

We’re seeking a Technical Program Manager, Threat and Incident Response for our Corporate Security team who will be responsible for overseeing our incident response tools and processes, covering proactive planning and prevention, as well as reactive detection and remediation. You will own the development of operational playbooks, oversee the incident response process, drive our Security Incident and Event Management (SIEM) technology, and ensure appropriate logging and monitoring across the organization’s infrastructure and applications. You will drive the critical steps of the incident response, and apply learnings toward our ability to be increasingly proactive in the future. We’ve set out to build a unique corporate security program by closely partnering our engineering, security, and IT teams together rather than relying on traditional blanket enterprise controls and rigid policies.
You will
- Incident Response Process – Own the critical process steps – detection, validation, containment, remediation, and communication – for computer-based security events and incidents such as malware infections, potential compromise, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), etc.
- Security Incident and Event Management (SIEM) – Drive our strategy for SIEM and oversee the effectiveness of the technology and process. Involves appropriate tuning, correlation of critical logs, connection to our incident response process, and reporting of relevant metrics.
- Triage – Respond to critical security incidents and lead escalations to close with response, containment and remediation.
- Security Operations Playbooks – Create, maintain and promote a set of security operation playbooks with CZI’s Central Tech teams to effectively trigger and execute the security incident response process.
- Logging and Monitoring Across Infrastructure & Applications – Manage the current state of logging and monitoring, maintain a vision of ideal state of logging and monitoring, and drive a prioritized roadmap to reduce the gaps.

The Shasta team goal is routine, accurate and cost-effective de novo genome sequencing of any individual or organism, for use in both research and clinical settings. In partnership with the University of California Santa Cruz Genomics Institute, the CZI team is building a de novo genome assembler for nanopore DNA sequencing. Shasta can assemble genomes in a fraction of the time and cost of traditional methods, and is used by scientists to explore the genomic diversity of all species.
As a Software Engineer in the Shasta team, you will work with scientists and engineers to advance the state of genome sequencing.

The Trust team is a mission critical team for the Education Initiative. Both education products, the Summit Learning Platform, and the newly launched video journal, Along, rely on accurate student data in order to personalize the learning experience. We’re responsible for earning and maintaining user trust through building infrastructures that guarantee the security and privacy of the products.
You will
- Partner closely with a cross-functional team to gather requirements and promote and implement best practices
- Design and improve privacy & security infrastructure to protect user data, including user access control for multiple systems
- Maintain and improve the data deletion and export system in compliance with our data privacy principles
- Mentor junior engineers on the team in growing both their skills and their careers
- Help to establish engineering culture
- Build off of and contribute back to the open-source ecosystem
You have
- 5+ years relevant coding experience
- Experience with Ruby on Rails framework or similar web frameworks
- Experience with a scripting language such as Ruby or Python
- Shown ability to independently define project requirements and ship high-quality software and contribute to software design decisions
- Experience mentoring junior engineers
- Experience designing privacy & security infrastructure (nice to have)

The Opportunity
The Infectious Disease program's goal is to help cure, manage or prevent infectious diseases which still represents 20% of human deaths worldwide. Researchers and clinicians need to understand what the disease is and how it is spreading in their community.
The IDseq application uses modern state-of-the-art pipelines and visualizations to enable identification of virus and bacterias where more targeted tests would fail. Our computationally intensive pipelines align genomic samples against large NCBI databases to identify all relevant organisms in the sample. Our web app focuses on pinpointing the most relevant pathogenic organisms and providing highly interactive visualizations that accelerate time to result and can be accessed by both expert and non-expert savvy users. IDseq is used by researchers all over the world, and has been used to identify full SARS-CoV-2 genomes, identify outbreaks and accelerate research in countries with limited access to cloud resources.
We are currently looking for an experienced engineer to help us build the next generation of our pipelines.
You will
- Design and build scalable, reliable and maintainable systems to process, store and access IDseq’s genomic data.
- Collaborate with computational biologists to improve performance and reliability of our genomic pipelines.
- Lead and facilitate discussions of design and implementation of software towards decisions, influencing a multidisciplinary group of stakeholders (design, UXR, product and computational biology).
- Mentor and coach junior engineers on best practices for performant and reliable system design.
- Collaborate closely with other engineers as part of a scrum team to deliver incremental value for scientists working at the cutting edge of an emerging field.

You have
- 5+ years of relevant software experience with full-stack web development or backend technologies..
- Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and object oriented programming principles.
- Proficiency in high-level scripting languages (preferably Python).
- Experience with cloud frameworks (preferably AWS).
- Experience with designing and implementing data or computational biology pipelines is a plus.
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary environment (engineering, product, UX).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A passion for learning about new fields and technologies.

The Summit Learning Program packages together technology and data, curricula, professional development and ongoing support.
The Engineering Manager will lead a product engineering team on the Learning Platform. The Learning Platform is the technology that delivers key components of the Summit Learning Program to school leaders, teachers, and students. These key components include self-directed learning, project-based learning, math units/concepts and mentoring.
Our product engineering teams are responsible for building core features on the Learning Platform. Some examples of such features are:
- Projects that are personalized for students to build and demonstrate cognitive skills.
- Students work through content and assessments at their own pace.
- Teachers use differentiation to help students learn.
- Students work with teacher mentors to develop a growth mindset, emotional intelligence, and self-directed learning skills.
- School leaders, district leaders, and other staff support implementation and teachers’ professional development.
- Support release and adoption of curriculum by schools.
We are focused on making our product efficient to use, driving effective teaching and learning behaviors, and ultimately increasing student outcomes.
This manager will lead a team of four to six engineers focused on developing new product features and enhancing user experience in our core product surface areas. They will partner closely with product managers, designers, user experience researchers, data scientists, data engineers, product specialists and our pedagogical partners to gather requirements, build high quality features that are scalable and reliable, and promote and implement best practices while developing and nurturing their team.
