The most interesting scaleup you haven’t yet heard of! Our product, Renew, lets users build and iterate complex mathematical models with the small, sparse and fragmented datasets that are used to drive critical decisions in many businesses. Such models are used to help answer questions like:
- What are the chances that SpaceX’s next launch will fail?
- How often will a company like TalkTalk have a cyber data breach?
- What would happen to the property in Silicon Valley if there was an earthquake?
- What are the chances of Kanye West cancelling his sell-out tour?
This sort of analysis has recently been neglected in favour of big data/analytics, but we are on a mission to change this. Our product has applications across multiple industries – we are focusing on speciality insurance to start with, but we believe our software has far further reach (including beyond the financial sector).

What does Engineering mean at hx?
Our Engineering team is front-and-centre in our mission to help our customers make smarter decisions faster. Building Renew has challenged us to solve many interesting problems, including:
- How to run arbitrary customer code securely, whilst controlling for indeterminism without accidentally trying to solve the halting problem
- How to produce a rich web-based development environment complete with IDE, version control, package management, tests, deployments and hosting... For non-developers
- How to produce a UI that’s familiar to Excel users without actively tying us to Excel
We’ve historically solved these problems with hard work and smart thinking, but we've reached the ‘two pizza limit’ and need move from ‘zero to one’ in places and ‘one to many’ in others so we can confidently solve more problems in parallel - problems like:
- How will we reach our ‘north star’ of deploying on-demand whilst ensuring the safety, security and correctness of our product?
- How do we safely move from one team to many and how should we divide the product domains?
- How should we optimise our systems to run larger models, more quickly, for less overall cost?
- How will we thoughtfully add 50+ people to the Product Engineering organisation over the next 18-24m without lowering our standards?
- Which systems need to be rewritten, refactored, removed or simply polished?
- How do we produce a UI component toolkit for our users that looks great and works brilliantly – irrespective of the weird and wonderful ways they’re assembled
Who are we looking for?
A Head of Engineering who will own, operate, grow and define our entire frontend capability. Your capability will be a pivotal part of a larger Product Engineering organisation along with groups from Backend Engineering, Product, Quality, Reliability and Security, and you’ll be part of its leadership team.
You must have:
- Leadership experience as a Director/Head of Engineering who has led through others, ideally at a fast-scaling technology organisation
- Significant experience developing advanced cloud-native applications and services with React and TypeScript
- Excellent knowledge and experience of fundamental CS/software engineering principles, including algorithms, data structures, complexity, testing, design patterns and architecture
- Strong understanding and significant experience working with and implementing modern software delivery practices including agile, lean, Kanban, organisational design and product engineering
- Demonstrable experience of strategic planning combined with effective delivery
- Proven experience attracting, motivating, developing and inspiring talented engineers
- Proven experience establishing principles, patterns and ways of working that eliminate friction and help teams deliver more than traditional thinking says is possible

What will you do?
In your first week:

Within one month:
- Take the reins of your capability and responsibility for its success
- Have understood and prioritised the people, technology and method challenges you want to tackle now/next/later and be developing a strategy to address them
- Add new perspectives to our thinking through our design/ideation sessions
Within three months:
- Have developed and agreed your strategy and will be actively delivering it
- Have landed your first hires and be working with our Talent team to keep the pipeline full and flowing
- Be working with your peers across Product Engineering to establish new cross-functional delivery teams
- Be sharing our story with the world in a way that suits you
Within six months:
- Have made your capability your own - with your people, technology and methods aligned to your strategy and direction
- Be accelerating innovation across hx directly through your capability and indirectly through your network and influence
- Be working with the CTO to identify and deliver additional strategic initiatives, tactical workstreams and/or special projects
- Understand our market, product, and value streams intimately
- Be thoughtfully influencing the broader product strategy and roadmap

This is a full-time position with the Platform Engineering Team. You’ll work both collaboratively and independently on concurrent complex projects to execute our infrastructure road map and promote DevOps best practices within the organization. You’ll be relied on to employ a high degree of technical skill and precision in a global, multi cloud environment running 24x7x365, while maintaining a positive and solution-focused attitude and good working relationships with your coworkers.
Platform Engineering at Higher Logic has a primary responsibility for service reliability in the production environment. In addition, we’re also crucial to Engineering enablement through the development and administration of CI/CD pipelines and the promotion of DevOps best practices. We live at the juncture of Engineering, Operations, and Support, which means that we interact with large swathes of the company on a daily basis. The company frequently introduces new products, features and services; these changes require a flexible, thoughtful, and forward-thinking approach to scalability and performance. As a DevOps Engineer, you will have the opportunity to perform hands-on configuration and tuning of service resources while working to architect and build independent microservices. Managing this environment requires a high level of individual knowledge and a robust capacity for learning, coupled with optimism, focus, and close teamwork across the organization and the company.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and configure cloud infrastructure components, primarily in AWS.
- Help to create strong feedback loops between all business lines by communicating, documenting and remediating operational incidents.
- Actively support security and compliance as a first-class concern.
- Decrease the incidence, scope and severity of operational failures (improve MTTR and MTBF).
- Guide products to Production Readiness (scalability, observability, operability, resiliency, etc.).
- Create, maintain and operate CI/CD pipelines, for both product and infrastructure resources (IAC).
- Provide on-call support for managed infrastructure

Senior Information Security Engineer
This is a full-time position with the Compliance and Security Team, working to meet organizational objectives pertaining to information security. This position is responsible for day-to-day operation of information security management tools, responding to internal and customer incident reports, and assisting in the development and implementation of policies and procedures. This position requires the ability to work independently on multiple concurrent complex projects to deliver technical solutions and perform in depth technical investigations. Success in this position is largely dependent on the ability to maintain effective security controls and have a thorough understanding of the organization’s security posture.
Key responsibilities:
- Oversees the implementation of network and computer security and ensures compliance with corporate cybersecurity frameworks, compliance standards, and Higher Logic policies and procedures (i.e. ISO 27001:2013, SOC2)
- Works with security leadership to identify and implement software solutions that will enhance security posture in production, development, and corporate environments
- Develops tooling to automate and improve manual security processes
- Engineers technical solutions to problems pertaining to information security
- Administers and maintains the effectiveness of various information security tooling including Firewalls, Intrusion Detection Systems, Vulnerability Scanners, and Malware Scanners
- Consults on development and infrastructure projects to advocate for security best practices
- Participates in risk assessments and coordinates formulation and execution of remediation plans
- Investigates security breaches and provides a comprehensive report that can be used to disseminate information about the incident to both technical and non-technical employees as needed
- Provides support to incident response team and provides analyses of network traffic and data anomalies to determine the source of the incident and work to get the system back to an operational state
- Performs security assessments of applications and systems using penetration and vulnerability testing and prioritizes remediations of findings
- Monitors performance and health of cloud infrastructure to support security initiatives
- Provides tier two on call technical support
- Communicates status on all activities and initiatives as required
Knowledge, skills and experience requirements:
- Deep understanding of security solutions including Firewalls, WAF, IDS/IPS, IAM solutions, MDR, and defense in depth strategies
- Solid understanding of the OWASP Top 10 such as SQLi, XSS, CSRF, and business logic flaws across large code bases
- Understanding of AWS technologies including VPC, EC2, ECS, IAM, S3, and Guard Duty
- Knowledge of AWS Security Best Practices and implementation strategies
- Expertise in an programming and scripting languages such as C#, Ruby, Python, Bash, or PowerShell
- Azure AD and Microsoft O365 experience a plus
- Expertise in building SQL queries to make sense of large amounts of data
- Experienced with administering Windows Server, , Linux, and OpenStack technologies
- Knowledge of TCP/IP fundamentals, routing and security concepts
- Ability to excel in a dynamic environment with multiple priorities
- Excellent oral and written communication skills required
- Exemplary organizational skills a must
- Strategic skills to develop a long-term vision for Higher Logic's Security vision in conjunction with Information Security leadership
- Ability to appropriately balance security needs with business impact & benefit.

Education:
- An advanced degree in security related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
Experience:
- Minimum 5-7 years of progressive experience in information security engineering
- Familiarity with one or more compliance frameworks (ISO 27001, SOC 2, FISMA)
- Understanding of regulatory and data privacy concerns domestically and globally. (e.g. CCPA, GDPR, PIPL)
