Your challenges and objectives:

The Shasta team goal is routine, accurate and cost-effective de novo genome sequencing of any individual or organism, for use in both research and clinical settings. In partnership with the University of California Santa Cruz Genomics Institute, the CZI team is building a de novo genome assembler for nanopore DNA sequencing. Shasta can assemble genomes in a fraction of the time and cost of traditional methods, and is used by scientists to explore the genomic diversity of all species.

You will own the development of operational playbooks, oversee the incident response process, drive our Security Incident and Event Management (SIEM) technology, and ensure appropriate logging and monitoring across the organization’s infrastructure and applications. You will drive the critical steps of the incident response, and apply learnings toward our ability to be increasingly proactive in the future. We’ve set out to build a unique corporate security program by closely partnering our engineering, security, and IT teams together rather than relying on traditional blanket enterprise controls and rigid policies.

You will

  • Incident Response Process – Own the critical process steps – detection, validation, containment, remediation, and communication – for computer-based security events and incidents such as malware infections, potential compromise, Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS), etc.
  • Security Incident and Event Management (SIEM) – Drive our strategy for SIEM and oversee the effectiveness of the technology and process. Involves appropriate tuning, correlation of critical logs, connection to our incident response process, and reporting of relevant metrics.

  • Proficiency with IaC tools such as Terraform, Ansible, and Packer in a cloud environment.
  • Knowledge of security and compliance best practices.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical documentation.

Nice to Have

  • Experience implementing and supporting a containerization platform with tools such as Docker, Nomad, and Kubernetes.
  • Prior hands-on experience with Hashicorp products such as Consul, Vault, and Nomad.
  • Experience with AWS services, including low-level EC2, VPC, and AMI; and managed services like ELB, EKS, RDS, S3, and ElastiCache.
  • A background in software development or similar product-oriented work.
