Scalable Path is looking for a Full-Stack PHP (Laravel/Lumen) and Vue.js Developer to join the team and work on a client project. This is a remote, full-time position. The client is also open to candidates who are available part-time.
CLIENT COMPANY DESCRIPTION:
The client is a digital wellness companion for adults living with and recovering from cancer. They curate content, discussions, and events for their community, and soon will release features that allow members’ friends and family to invest in their healing through a socially responsible e-commerce marketplace.
Although our purpose is incredibly serious, our approach is not. You could say that memes are our love language, and our internal Slack channel is a reflection of the refreshing new product we’re building to bring more joy to the cancer experience.
They are an early-stage startup -- created by a solo founder and 25-year cancer thriver -- that launched in February 2020. They are currently a small team, but already have strong advisors, investors, and partners on board and thousands of people who champion the mission.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a lead full-stack software engineer, you will help the client to build high-quality, engaging, and empowering features that help cancer thrivers better cope with cancer through community support. Since July 2019, they have built four core features that will provide their community with content, conversation, a social tool, and a marketplace to serve as a companion to heal their mind and body in treatment and recovery. As they test and roll out these features, they’ll iterate and improve the experience.
The client is looking to transition their development from a Ukraine-based team to a full-time (or part-time) engineer closer to the central US time zone, who is adept at writing maintainable and reusable components using VueJS and writing backend APIs in PHP with code that is reliable, readable and uses best practices. You will be responsible for building and deploying the whole stack, outlined below. The previous team that coded the application did not build things in an optimal way, so some of the work will be to refactor and improve the existing code to make it more stable and maintainable.
The backend app is currently built in Lumen, but the client is considering migrating to Laravel in the future. They are looking for someone with either Lumen or Laravel experience, but Laravel is preferred. The frontend app is a Vue.js-based SPA so experience with Vue is a must.
RELATIONSHIPS - WHO YOU'LL BE WORKING WITH:
You will be working with and reporting to the founder and CEO who will be acting as the Product Owner, and alongside the Community Director with support from a tech advisor. The client is in the America/Chicago (-05:00) CDT time zone.
START DATE:
As soon as possible.
EXPECTED CONTRACT DURATION:
The project is expected to last approximately 3 months (and could become longer term if things go well)
NOTES:
The client's preference is to find available full-time candidates, but they are also open to candidates who have at least 20 hours/week available and are not overcommitted.
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- - PHP (Must have)
- - Vue.js (Must have)
- - Laravel (Must have)
- - PostgreSQL (Must have)
- - HTML (Must have)
- - Written English (Must have)
- - Spoken English (Must have)

ChainSafe Systems is a blockchain R&D firm on a mission to realize the potential of Web3 infrastructure through sustainable, open-source development. Our vision is to create a world with organizations that empower people to build and innovate through blockchain agnostic tools and other distributed technologies.
We are global leaders in the industry, unique in our work across multiple blockchain ecosystems, and currently are pioneering Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Cosmos, Polkadot and Filecoin technology. We are actively pursuing the development of our own product suite, having recently released Files, which allows users to upload and store files on IPFS and Filecoin with the goal of furthering development to provide a decentralized alternative to cloud storage.
ChainSafe is a unique company in a unique space, growing quickly and building a global reputation in this nascent space. Beyond offering experience across every major blockchain space to our team, we provide an open, inclusive, and supportive environment where we help folks reach their full potential as a human and as a professional.
Here’s what you might want to know before reading on:
- Our stack is progressive and open-source and includes Go, Rust, and TypeScript.
- We spearhead ecosystem projects like Lodestar, Web3.js, Forest, Gossamer and Ethermint.
- We are global, remote-friendly, and open to contractors (who can commit to a minimum of 35 hours a week). For those local to Toronto, our casual, open-concept office in Chinatown has meeting rooms, lounge areas, and space to pull up a chair.
Culture fit and alignment to our core values are extremely important to us. We are fueled by an immense intellectual curiosity of what technology can do and the impact it can have. You will thrive here if you are intensely driven by tackling technical challenges that no one else has solved yet and are inspired by the possibility of building the next generation of web infrastructure and decentralized systems.
Who we need
We are looking for a passionate and proactive Rust Developer who shares our commitment to building out open source software and pushing blockchain into mainstream adoption. You will work alongside a core team on cutting-edge technology and projects. You will contribute to your team's success through consistent, high-quality code and jumping in wherever you are needed.
Who you are
You have a genuine enthusiasm for the capabilities and performance of Rust, and using Rust cryptography libraries. You have at least one year of building experience with Rust and are familiar with Filecoin, IPFS, Polkadot, or Substrate. With solid examples of your work and involvement in the blockchain community through Discord, Slack, blogging, or virtual meetups, you have the ability to describe core features of the language such as concurrency and memory management.
What’s in it for you
It goes without saying that the work we do at ChainSafe will offer you the most significant technical challenges you can imagine - and some that you can’t. Over and above that, you will gain:
- Peer and community recognition. You want to make a meaningful contribution to the open source work that is driving the Web3 infrastructure and blockchain space forward, becoming a master of the domain. We are actively contributing to the Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, Cosmos, Polkadot, and Filecoin ecosystems and are open to contributing to other Web3 ecosystems where we see the merit.
- Mentorship - and the chance to lead. You want to be mentored by experts in bleeding-edge technology and the services we build and support, with an opportunity to mentor and facilitate learning and growth for those newer to the work.
- Fulfillment. You want to work with the best people, on cutting edge technologies, contributing to an incredible range of projects that have an impact individually and as a whole.
How you will make a difference
- Grow. You will maintain and expand a deep understanding of the relevant technology and ecosystems through Meetups, Discord, Github, podcasts, articles, forums, and conversations with your peers here and in your professional sphere. In turn, you will provide support and training for other developers, guiding and reviewing their code.
- Iterate. You will play a key role in collaborating with internal teams to fix and improve products, determine clever approaches to improve syncing and storage operations. You will work on and with trie structures, libp2p, cryptography, block production and state transition logic. You will dig into the challenge of building the tools for the next generation of the web, solving problems that haven’t been thought of.
What you bring
- The practical, proven experience. You have solid hands-on experience as a Software Developer, most recently building and developing with Rust. You have a practical understanding of its paradigms, constructs, and idioms.
- The knowledge. You have a concrete understanding of distributed systems, computer networking, core blockchain concepts and a basic understanding of cryptography and common applications.
- The passion. You are a vocal advocate for open source technologies and decentralized systems. You spend your waking hours thinking about, learning, and applying new findings as an active member of the blockchain community. You have a portfolio or GitHub profile demonstrating your contributions to Web3 projects. You are genuinely excited to be part of our mission.
- The ownership. You show a lot of initiative and can work with minimal direction. You want to help the team thrive within our established culture of trust, openness, respect, and collaboration.
