We need a Principal Software Engineer to be the technical expert on our platform team covering all aspects relating to architecture, development and support.  Your responsibilities will be to:

• Lead technical architecture, software design and software development practices for Lurn's eLearning platform team. Continuously define, refine and drive teams toward new software architectures to meet new strategic business needs.
• Leverage established programming standards, methods, and best practices to lead the solutioning of complex programming challenges
• Serve as a technical SME to help identify and address critical areas of concern across multiple applications. 
• Support technical leadership and product management with the design of multi-system solutions, technical implementation planning, and software development coordination.
• Ensure the technical feasibility of UI/UX and Product designs
• Develop software and own the architecture for one or more web applications or API/backend applications
• Define, oversee and develop software development processes and standards focusing on quality, security, reliability, scalability, and performance
• Mentor junior software engineers and facilitate knowledge sharing and learning across teams.
• Provide production support for critical web application problems and issues.

Here's what we are looking for:

• 5+ years experience as a senior software engineer working with modern web applications and tooling (e.g. Git, APIs, CI/CD etc)
• 3+ years leading software architecture for distributed applications
• 3+ years working with customers to build and formulate business requirements.
• 5+ years experience working on all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle.
• 5+ years of experience building full stack applications, Restful APIs, and asynchronous processing applications using PHP/Laravel Framework, MySQL, Redis etc.
• 3+ years of experience building dynamic frontends using leading frontend technologies and frameworks - Javascript: Vue.js, JQuery; CSS pre-processing platforms, such as LESS and SASS.
• 4+ years of web application server technologies (Apache, NGinx, Varnish etc.)
• 4+ years working with Software Development using AWS Cloud 
• 3+ years working with Node.JS (or willingness to learn)
• Able to work in a fast-paced, virtual environment

Summary

Your First 90 Days

In your first 30 Days, as your familiarity with the product and pipeline grows, your responsibilities and influence will grow as well. You will become immersed in all facets of the daily operation of the production cloud environment including provisioning new customers, deploying software builds, reviewing metrics and alerts, troubleshooting, and blameless incident postmortems.  Further, you will collaborate with members of both the Product Development and Cloud Development teams to ensure that operations can support new functionality.

Within your first 60 Days, you will collaborate with the Director of Cloud Support to define the transition of Cloud Support to a true SRE practice. Working with the rest of the Cloud Support team, you will be responsible for identifying procedures currently handled manually or that are not fully automated which you will begin automating. Working with the Cloud Development team, you will identify and implement out the gaps between lower and upper delivery environments leading to a truly scalable product offering. You, along with the rest of the Cloud Support team, will be responsible for supporting production environments.

Within your first 90 Days, you will help drive changes to the operational and development roadmap as we continue onboarding new and existing customers into our hosted production environments. You will work with the Director of Cloud Support to identify a training plan to address skills gaps within the Cloud Support team to support the transition to an SRE practice. You will also begin gathering and refining requirements for a new Cloud Control system expanding and integrating with our existing Cloud API. This system will incorporate functions and automations related to the daily operation of our production cloud environment.

What You’ll Do

Provision, configure, and maintain the production environment to handle running several application stacks in the cloud that can scale to the thousands of customers using our products as well as our internal Product Team.

• Automate the deployment and maintenance of cloud platform technologies in the upper environments ensuring that changes are also reflected in the lower environments
• Aid in improving the overall product through development of management automation and metrics analysis in the upper environment
  • Integrate current scripts, automations, and functions spread across multiple tools into a coherent Cloud Control system
  • Collaborate with Cloud Development on database deployment capability to release pipeline (automate schema changes across all databases)
  • Evaluate metrics as customers are moved to new production environment
  • Create a metrics-based performance dashboard for production that includes predictive warnings which can be addressed prior to an incident occurring
  • Prepare for multi-tenant product solutions in coordination with cloud development
• Implement and oversee log management, data warehouse, and database operations, including management of Logging/Audit services
• Ensure all monitoring systems (infrastructure- and application-level) are in place, report on availability and system health
• Collect and distill existing management and monitoring tools, scripts, and functions into a single coherent package for easy consumption but with the ability to drill down to details
• Implement strategies around disaster recovery and security for all sub-systems in infrastructure (g., web servers, database, queues, storage, network)
• Build strategic and tactical plans for continued improvement of cloud architecture and operations
• Perform capacity management, load and scalability planning
• Help drive process improvements for service management, including outage/incident management, rollbacks, health checks and reporting
• Assist management in development and optimization of operational cost models

• 2+ years of hands-on experience as a production SRE managing an environment of 500+ containers over 50+ namespaces
• 4+ years of hands-on development experience with applications and RESTful API’s architected for cloud
• Performance optimization experience, including troubleshooting and resolving network and server latency issues, performing hardware evaluation/selection tasks, performance vs. cost vs. time analysis 
• 1-3 years of experience with Kubernetes
• 1-3 years of experience with Terraform
• 1+ year(s) of experience with automation or scripting tools (e.g., GO, Python, Shell)

Skills & requirements

We’d love to chat with you if you have:

• Experience with implementing and supporting Kubernetes-based infrastructure.
• Experience working on a large-scale system to make it performant, highly scalable, and fault-tolerant.
• Experience in Linux systems administration and a deep understanding of how web-related services (load balancers, high availability solutions, web servers, databases, caching daemons, etc.) work.
• Proficiency in information systems concepts, system administration, and cloud platforms.
• Proficiency with some or all of: NGINX, Docker, PHP, Golang, LUA, MySQL, ELK.
• Working knowledge of network technologies such as: TCP/IP stack, IPv6, DNS, Anycast, firewalls (iptables), and TLS.
• A passion for open source software.

Stardog Studio is the face of the Stardog Platform. It provides an IDE-like experience for Knowledge Engineers and developers to create data models, integrate data, execute and debug queries, and manage Stardog itself.

But as more enterprises adopt Knowledge Graphs and Knowledge Graph-based technology, the scope of what the Studio product should provide is expanding. New personas are being introduced to the Knowledge Graph, and we are designing and building new ways for technical and non-technical users to explore, understand, design, and build their knowledge graphs.

As our vision expands, so must our team. We're looking for a talented individual to be a new team lead and work alongside the technical architect of Stardog Studio and the Product Manager to help guide that part of the overall Studio product. You will be responsible for coordinating the team, conducting 1:1's, mentoring your teammates, as well as designing and building new features.

Studio is written with Typescript using React, so we're expecting you to be familiar with those technologies. Bonus points if you're familiar with Node.js, Redux, and Webpack. Even more of a bonus if you know Sass, or just have some background in UX and design and are familiar with tools like Figma or Sketch.

No degree? No problem. Having a piece of paper with some fancy words on it like "Computer Science" is great, but not a requirement. You can be an engineer without an engineering degree. What we're looking for is an experienced engineer, who has guided a team before, to come in, work hard, and be passionate about solving our user's problems. We are looking for real engineering work as well as demonstrable experience and skills in a leadership capacity.

This is primarily a remote position. You should be comfortable with, and have experience working remotely. You must have strong communication skills as much of our interactions will be over email, chat, and PR where it's harder to get your point across. The rest of the team is in the EST (UTC-5) time zone, so the closer the time zone alignment, the better.

Duties will include: (not limited to):

• Design and build new features with Python 3.8 / Django 2+ and Golang,
• Test what you write, contribute to how it runs, is deployed, and scaled with DevOps team (kubernetes/GitlabCI/AWS),
• Work close with frontend developers,
• Learn and propose improvements, so we can stay at the cutting edge of web development.
• Be curious about our product and know it,
• Help us in balancing the time-quality-feature, break features into smaller pieces,
• Contribute to Codility Engineering - how we build, develop, and release our software,
• Help less experienced engineers to grow and develop.

Experience Required:

• Can code blindfolded in Python,
• Golang experience is a plus,
• Have experience with a modern web framework,
• Have a habit of leaving code in a better shape than you’ve found it,
• Don’t like process or quality problems to stay around and would go out of your way to fix them,
• Previously coded something you find exciting and cannot wait to tell us about it,
• Make decisions after looking at a problem from all angles,
• Are comfortable receiving and giving feedback,
• Are comfortable working in English,

• Have experience with designing scalable system components,
• Have experience with Test Driven Development, architecture patterns and lean/agile methodologies,
• Are open for learning new things,
• Being proactive, drives initiatives, speaks up when problems, issues emerge,
• Get things done,
• Are able to slice a problem.
